G e n e r a l l y , greatest hits albums are put together by third parties, with artists watching from the sidelines as others pick and choose what best represents their stuff. In fact, if The Greatest Hits, GRITS’ definitive best-of collection, were a single-disc affair, it would appear to be exactly that. The anthology does a good job of chronicling the life and times of the best-selling hip-hop duo, but it’s too centered on latter-day glories, downplaying their more demure, jazzier beginnings.
Leave it to GRITS to make the best of the situation and offer a second disc as part of the Hits bundle. Aptly dubbed “A Second Serving,” the disc is essentially a brand-new album, chockfull of unreleased songs, rarities and remixes. The fact that these aren’t official A-sides is not an area of concern, as the tandem makes sure to not skimp on quality—rhythmic, poetic, or otherwise—delivering nine new songs just as big, bold and bad as anything circa The Art of Translation.
Later albums have seen GRITS favoring introspection, but songs like the floor-blazing “Gutta Music” and the Jazzy Pha-like “Bad 4 Me” bring back their predilection for top-notch pop bangers. Even the more pensive moments (“Redemption,” “Beautiful”) are so thick and in-your-face, they demand attention to every lyric. Collectively, it’s a sweet, well thoughtout second half, one that assuages any omissions or faux pas present in Hits’ fine yet incomplete first half.

Reviewed by Tova Jessen (Sioux City, IA), June 29, 2009 This is a great cd. With Grits hits. The only thing that I was disapointed with was that some songs are on both cds. But other than that it was great! Write a review of Grits: The Greatest Hits CD
